My Thanksgiving Traditions with Food Allergies

Food allergies mean that, sometimes, we can’t enjoy holidays like everyone else. From adjusting popular recipes to always double-checking ingredients when eating over, Thanksgiving is no exception. However, with the help of my family, I’ve found ways to celebrate our Thanksgiving traditions while being considerate of food allergies.

The quintessential Thanksgiving involves a big meal surrounded by family and friends who share gratitude. However, food allergies typically mean that we must take extra precautions, not only with safe food but also by ensuring no cross-contact. My family likes to plan the Thanksgiving meal about a week before so we can take advantage of it.

By doing this prep, I also have a chance to look at recipes to make dishes from scratch and have extra time to prep any specific ingredients or substitutes for the big day. It might seem too early, but the earlier I’m confident about what we want to eat, the more comfortable I am on Thanksgiving Day.

My family has long had the tradition of a nice, cozy family meal, and serving everyone means a long cooking process. During the baking and cooking, I love being with my parents to help them out. Since our house is free of my allergens, I feel safe and have a chance to pitch in. However, eating over at others’ homes is a little more complicated since we can’t be 100% sure without advance notice.

Before we visit friends or family, we give them about the same notice as that for food prep—around a week—to let them know about my allergies. That way, they are ready and aware of cross-contact and know how to avoid it. I also always carry my Epi-Pen and allergy medication just in case and pack some extra allergen-safe snacks.

When these few extra steps are taken, our Thanksgiving tradition of sharing one or two things we’re grateful for at the dinner table continues. In the end, the ambiance of the autumnal candles and the loved ones surrounding me make Thanksgiving a little less intimidating.
