Traveling with food allergies can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be! As a person with food allergies, here are some of the most effective tips for traveling that have worked for me.
Keep Your EpiPen Close: First, always make sure that you have your EpiPen within easy reach. I usually keep mine in a side pocket of my backpack or in a small pouch that I carry with me. It’s so important to be able to grab it quickly if you need it! I even have a bright, colorful case that I keep it in so I can spot it easily. Personalizing it with some fun stickers can make it feel a bit more distinctive and like yours!
Meal Prep: Don’t just toss snacks into a bag—plan ahead. I like to pack all the meals I’ll need for the trip, plus a few extras in case I end up at the airport longer than expected. It really helps to avoid the stress of searching for safe food when you’re on the go.
Go Beyond With Wipes: Once you’re settled in your seat, don’t forget to wipe everything down to ensure safety. I bring sanitizing wipes and go over the tray table, armrests, seatbelt, and even the window if I can reach it. It’s such a simple step that really makes a difference in keeping allergens at bay.
Snack Smart: Bring a mix of your favorite snacks to enjoy on the airplane! I always pack items like protein bars, trail mix, or other allergen-free goodies. It’s great to have something tasty on hand, especially during long flights.
Once You Reach Your Destination: As soon as you land, make it a point to find the nearest grocery store. Stock up on safe foods you can eat and start planning your meals for the days ahead. I also like to grab items that last a while, so I have something ready on those busy days when I’m out exploring and can’t cook.
